The challenge

The client was working with outdated drawings and lacked confidence in whether their newly designed clamp would fit the existing equipment. To address this uncertainty, they engaged HPR to perform photogrammetry and accurately verify the dimensions of the existing setup.

They were also facing budget and timeline constraints, as they had to ensure they could meet the manufacturing deadlines for the clamp, but didn’t end up arriving to site with a costly diver rate of £230k/day to install a clamp that wouldn’t fit.

The solution

The client suggested the integration of a Stereo camera, as they knew HPR were experts in innovation and creating bespoke solutions to solve a problem, therefore would be able to carry out this integration. To support the successful delivery of the project, we developed a custom frame and fitted additional buoyancy.

We provided visual, cleaning, and inspection services - namely photogrammetry and metrology. This was successfully hand-deployed from the platform by a three-man team. We also sent a data engineer to complete the postprocessing offshore, which allowed us to have results within three days.

The results

Integration and testing onshore was completed in one week, with cleaning operations offshore taking only four working days and photogrammetry inspection just one day.

We were able to prove that the original design would not fit, which gave the clients verification to change the clamp design in time for manufacturing, which resulted in the successful installation four months later.

The impact

Overall, the cost for this entire scope was less than one Dive Support Vessel day. If the diver had arrived to the site with a clamp that didn't fit, this would have cost the company millions and left them unable to deliver on target decommissioning dates.

By identifying the issue early, HPR’s intervention was essential in preventing costly downtime and ensuring the operation stayed on schedule.
