The challenge

Due to the age of the platforms, the operators had limited knowledge as to whether there were depleted anodes, braces or clamps which hadn't been shown on original drawings. These components could end up snagging items when the time came to pull them through the guides, so having better visibility of them was crucial.

They also wanted to monitor whether the tooling completed the cut through the conductor before they started pulling with the ROV, while also confirming that the tooling successfully activated to grip the conductor.

A cost-effective subsea inspection solution was essential to the operators in the delivery of the removal scope. Bed space and deck space is premium in an asset’s decommission phase, so a small two-man team was much more attractive due to the smaller footprint and subsequent cost savings.

The solution

The project scope was dependant on what we identified, and the removal method required as a result. In the end, we provided visual, cleaning, cutting, laser scanning and photogrammetry services for the conductors – all of which were deployed from the platforms.

This allowed us to confirm the conductor condition and any bracelets or accessories that could provide an obstacle when removal was taking place through the guide supports. We also created a custom cutting solution to remove a padeye that was still there to ensure a successful removal campaign.

The results

Every campaign for this project was unique, and often dependant on the removal method used. Throughout the project, we were always ready to deliver and unlocked the client’s ability to identify challenges early enough to intervene. This ensured the project remained on schedule, therefore saving time and money for the client.

The impact

HPR was initially called out to one of the assets for five days to support with a stuck conductor. However, once the client saw the quality of the footage from our ROV systems and the benefit of understanding what was happening subsea, they requested the team to stay till the end of the campaign – a total of three months.

Overall, we were able to deliver faster removal operations, a reduction in the clients’ decommissioning costs, and a number of lessons learned for future operations.
