North Sea veteran joins fledgling engineering firm

North Sea oil and gas industry veteran John Marsden has been recruited by two former colleagues to help with rapid growth at their young engineering services company.

Origin Integrity Management predicts it will treble annual turnover to £3 million within the next three years.

A key factor will be the imminent launch of its own bespoke technology to complement its consultancy and integrity management systems.

The workforce is also expected to soar during the same period from 13 to more than 40 people.

Origin depends on the oil and gas industry for the bulk of its work, but its services and systems are equally transferable to renewables, where significant growth is expected.

The company HQ is in Newcastle and it is shortly to move to a bigger site in the city to accommodate its expansion.

It also plans to open an office in Aberdeen next year, as well as extending its international operations.

Origin’s team has gained extensive worldwide experience in integrity management engineering and inspection in the North Sea and other regions such as the Middle East and Africa.

Clients include international oil companies as well as major oil producers.

Origin directors Phil Surtees and Steve McKenny previously worked with Mr Marsden at Aberdeen firm Flexlife before they started their own venture earlier this decade.

Mr Marsden said: “The three of us always said it would be good to get back together in another venture – and we feel this is the perfect opportunity.

“The oil and gas market is picking up and offshore renewables is continuing to grow.”

They said opening an Aberdeen office is seen as the next logical step for Origin’s expansion as the city is the oil capital of Europe. The North Sea is a mature basin and Origin specialises in helping operators to extend asset life and minimise failures.

Mr Marsden has now taken a position on the board of Origin with an equal equity stake alongside Mr Surtees and Mr McKenny and has been appointed commercial director.

In the last two decades, Mr Marsden’s many previous roles include co-founder and chief operating officer at Flexlife and UK managing director of the Vertech business at Global Energy Group.
