Hiretech boss makes more time for strategy with key appointment

Hiretech’s boss has freed himself up to focus more on the north-east energy service firm’s “strategic direction” by making a key managerial appointment.

Founder and owner Andy Buchan has stepped into the newly created role of chief executive at the equipment rental company.

Keith Mackie, formerly of Aberdeenshire-based lifting gear maker Power Jacks, has filled the managing director position vacated by Mr Buchan.

Mr Buchan said Hiretech’s growth and increased workload meant he had been too busy to think about the firm’s strategy.

The new appointment will give Mr Buchan time to lift his head “above the parapet”, he said, adding: “I’m going to be looking more at the strategic direction and planning, while Keith is going to be more involved in the day-to-day operations. I’m going to set objectives and he’s going to deliver.”

Entrepreneur Mr Buchan sold his first venture, Buchan Technical Services, to marine service company James Fisher and Sons for just under £5 million following an approach by the group in 2007.

He subsequently worked as a consultant for various energy sector firms, before launching Hiretech in 2010.

The company, which is based in Fintray, near Dyce, invested about £1.5m in rental equipment last year, and intends to inject similar levels of investment in 2019.

Mr Buchan said Hiretech had about 30 employees and was “taking on more people all the time”.

Mr Mackie said: “I am delighted to be joining Hiretech at such an exciting time.  The customer focused growth delivered through integrity, technical strength and investment is within the DNA of Hiretech and I look forward to further developing the business.”
