First gas from Culzean in ‘a few days’ says Total boss

First production from one of the UK’s largest gas fields is due in “a few days’ time”, according to the North Sea boss of Total.

Jean-Luc Guiziou was speaking at the opening session of the Oil and Gas UK Industry Conference in Aberdeen, looking ahead to delivering the £3.3bn Culzean mega-project.

Mr Guiziou said the development, which will produce around five percent of the UK’s gas needs, will be delivered under budget.

He said: “Culzean is going to be delivered in a few days’ time, ahead of schedule and under budget.

“Culzean is a good news story for the UK, with about 100,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day with 80% of it being gas.

“It contributes to the UK’s security of supply. With extensive infrastructure already built across the UK, gas is accessible and affordable for the vast majority of UK homes and businesses.”

The Culzean project will produce around five percent of UK gas demand

Culzean is estimated to hold between 250millon and 300million barrels of oil equivalent and is expected to continue producing for at least 13 years.

It was the largest UK gas field to be given the go-ahead in 25 years when it was sanctioned in 2015.

Mr Guiziou used his speech to highlight the importance of gas in the energy transition, with the UK’s switch to gas from coal helping the country make “major strides” in reducing emissons.

He added: “By successfully completing Culzean, which will produce around five percent of UK gas demand, Total and its partners is helping the UK meet its energy needs as well as preparing for a long term lower-carbon future.”
