Energy Voice | Unite launches petition after Scottish Government rejects bid for helicopter inquiry

Offshore union Unite has launched a petition calling for support after the Scottish Government rejected calls for a public inquiry into helicopter safety.

Unite, RMT and Labour MSP Lewis Macdonald have been seeking Holyrood support for a UK inquiry into whether “commercial pressures” were jeopardising safety.

A total of 33 people have died in helicopter accidents in the North Sea in the last decade.

Earlier this month, energy minister Paul Wheelhouse said an inquiry “would not be helpful” as there is ongoing work being carried out within the industry.

In a newly-launched petition, Unite said workers’ voices are “absent” from these reviews and that a full public inquiry would give workers a chance to express their concerns.

Aviation safety remains under the control of the UK government so it is Westminster which will have final say on whether to carry out the investigation.
