Babcock names former Shell exec as new chairwoman

Defence and aerospace firm Babcock has appointed a Shell veteran as its new chairwoman.

Ruth Cairnie has officially joined the board today, and will take over as chair from Mike Turner following his retirement in July after 11 years in the role.

Ms Cairnie has held numerous senior roles over a 37-year career, including as executive vice president of strategy and planning at Shell.

She is also the chairmwoman of the POWERful Women action group, which is aimed at advancing gender diversity in the energy sector.

Additionally, she is the senior independent director of Associated British Foods and a non-executive director at Rolls Royce and ContourGlobal.

On her appointment, Mike Turner said: “We are delighted to welcome Ruth to the Board.

“She is a strategic thinker and strong leader, and we look forward to her bringing her in-depth experience, gained from a broad range of executive and non-executive roles at leading industrial companies, both in the UK and internationally, to benefit Babcock.”

Ms Cairnie said: “I am delighted to be joining the Babcock team and I look forward to working with the Board and the executive team to deliver shareholder value, and to help maximise future opportunities.

“I am hugely enthusiastic about the opportunity to oversee the next stage of Babcock’s development as a major company delivering complex engineering to support its clients, both in the UK and internationally.”

Babcock runs an oil and gas helicopter operation for the North Sea through its subsidiary Babcock Offshore.
